Dell’s new stylish Mini10 has built a lot of buzz because of a few fancy features that other netbooks don’t have: a choice of processors between the Atom Z520 or Z530, an HDMI port and plans to include 720P screens, GPS and a TV tuner in the near future.
A Dell corporate blogger recently announced that all Mini 10s will come with 1GB of fixed RAM, meaning it won’t be upgradeable. This might be an issue when Windows7 gets released. Microsoft’s new version of its powerhouse franchise is based on Vista, which is notoriously resource-intensive. 1GB of RAM might not be enough.
This could just be another step of Netbooks moving away from computers. Retailers and manufacturers don’t allow customers to upgrade the performance power of their cell phone. Likewise, netbooks might become such a low-priced high-volume item that manufacturers would eliminate hardware customization altogether.
