The anticipated 10 inch version of the popular Dell Mini 9, aptly named the Dell Mini 10, will be debuting online on February 26th.  However, those who just cannot wait a few more days can get theirs early, from an unlikely source, QVC.

Yes, those looking to get their ultra-portable fix can tune into QVC tonight (February 19th) at 9 p.m. to preorder their Dell Mini 10 before anyone else.  The laptop starts at $399, weighs in at 2.86 pounds and has a keyboard set at 92% of traditional notebook size.  It runs Windows XP standard with no option for a Linux OS and comes standard with 1GB RAM and 160GB worth of hard drive space.  Those ordering from QVC will receive free shipping, a 4GB SD Card and preloaded productivity software standard.  Those looking for a bigger hard drive, more ram, or an Ubuntu OS will have to wait for the general release on the 26th.

A quick look at the demographics drawn by the QVC.com reveals exactly who they’re trying to market this to.  QVC is the mecca for older affluent women, a demographic where there is a solid chance that someone watching QVC at 9 p.m. on a Thursday will have never seen anything resembling a netbook before.  Dell wants their new netbook, one that comes in a variety of colors for and provides a clear aesthetic value, to be the first netbook this group has ever seen.  Consequentially, they also want it to be the first netbook they ever buy.

Genius marketing maneuver by Dell or a waste of their advertising budget?
